The Myth of Work Life Balance

Anytime I ask a woman what she is struggling with, the answer, more often than not, is balance. Finding balance in work and life. Emotional balance. Self-care balance. Balancing my own needs with everyone else’s needs. Balancing being a leader and a mother. Trying to balance it all… These are the answers I get.

Well, here’s the thing: I don’t believe in balance this way. Life balance, to me, is a myth. If you are a human woman living a human life, then by nature, something is always out of balance. Something or someone always needs our attention more than another thing. We can’t possibly have equal proportions of all things in our lives.

So what are we really seeking?

I think the answer is connection. Connection with our deepest self, our longings, our desires, our bodies, our passions, our truth…

We are seeking deeper connection with those we love, our communities, our gifts, our children, our own soul.

We are seeking attunement with ourselves and what is real.

The problem is not balance, it is that we are disconnected from our higher selves. We feel out of alignment because we are not honoring who we truly are. We live lives that don’t reflect our true essence.

When we start to listen deeply to the voice inside us, and make decisions based on our truth, we begin to find more harmony, peace, and connection.

So instead of looking through the lens of balance, I invite you to look through the lens of connection.

Where are you the most disconnected right now? What can you do to reconnect to that lost part of life, or that lost part of yourself? Imagine what your life would look like if you felt deeply connected in that way.

If you feel called, I would love to hear from you. Comment below and let me know what you’re thinking.

Also, I will be going deeper into the myth of work-life balance this Sunday at our regular Sunday Service. I’d love for you to join me. It’s a free offering in our private group at 9am PST.

a place to belong.

a feminine space of devotion

After two decades of leading circles, mentoring women, and building communities, the next evolution of my work revealed itself — Her Sanctuary.

It's community and connection and a sense of belonging. It feels like a deep sigh of relief. It's women supporting women and bringing back the ancient practice of devoted sisterhood, ceremony, and ritual. It's remembering who we are as strong, courageous, empowered, wise women, and having a space to speak our truth. This is a community of care. It's like a church for the sacred feminine.

Her Sanctuary is the living embodiment of The Practice — a temple for women to remember who they are, together.
